Bridge Division Begins In-Water Work in Beaufort County
Sanford Contractors’ Bridge Division reached a major milestone on the Mouth of the Creek Road Bridge Replacement project over Blounts Creek in Beaufort County. In-water work began July 1, the first day of the permitted in-water work window, and crews have since driven the first test pile for the permanent structure.
The new bridge will be just over 950 feet long and will consist of eight spans with 54-inch FIB girders. Preparing to build the structure required significant advance planning, including site preparation and material coordination. The project also requires the installation of more than 900 linear feet of temporary work bridge to provide construction access.
SCI’s Support Services Division has kept equipment and supplies moving to the site, making multiple trips each week since in-water work began. That support will continue over the next several months.
The current in-water work window runs through Feb. 15, 2027, and is designed to protect aquatic species, including Atlantic sturgeon. The team is on track to complete the new structure by or ahead of that deadline. The existing bridge will be removed in a second in-water season.
Reaching the in-water milestone on schedule reflects SCI’s ability to align planning, field operations, logistics, and resources across divisions to keep complex projects moving.
