Why Investing in Partnerships Still Matters: 30 Years of Putting Relationships First

Sanford Contractors celebrates 30 years of Partner Appreciation Day with industry partners.

Strong Partnerships Don’t Happen by Accident

Construction is built on teamwork. Every project depends on people working together, from contractors and subcontractors to suppliers, owners, and other industry partners. While schedules, budgets, and quality are essential to a project’s success, the relationships between those involved play a significant role.

Strong working relationships take time to develop. They are built through good communication, commitments, and working through challenges together. Just as importantly, they require effort outside the immediate demands of a project.

At Sanford Contractors, building strong partnerships is a long-term commitment. It goes beyond working well together on a single project and focuses on developing dependable connections that bring people back together for future opportunities. This reflects Sanford Contractors’ “One Trusted Partner” approach and its belief that successful partnerships extend well beyond the jobsite.

Building Trust Through Everyday Actions

Trust is built in day-to-day work. It comes from being dependable, communicating openly, and addressing problems when they arise. In construction, where unexpected challenges are part of the job, having a strong relationship with the people around you can make a big difference.

“When asked what makes a lasting partnership, Sanford Contractors President Donnie Oldham emphasized the importance of how partners treat one another and the standards they uphold in their work: “Honesty first, respect, fairness, and doing quality work.”

When partners understand one another and know they can have an honest conversation, it becomes easier to work through difficult situations and find solutions. That kind of working relationship does not develop overnight, and it cannot be established solely when a project is underway.

Making Time to Show Appreciation

With the demands of construction, day-to-day responsibilities often take priority. Meeting deadlines, solving problems, and preparing for the next phase of work all require attention. But taking time to recognize the people who make that work possible is just as important.

For 30 years, Sanford Contractors’ annual Partner Appreciation Day has provided an opportunity to bring industry partners together outside of the jobsite.

When asked why Partner Appreciation Day began, President Donnie Oldham explained its original purpose: “To introduce different clients to each other and share all the things Sanford Contractors offers. And to give tours of the new location.”

What began as an opportunity to make connections and share more about the business has continued to bring partners together beyond their individual projects.

Reaching this milestone is a reminder that relationships deserve attention, too. Making time for partners sends a message that their contributions matter and relationships matter beyond the work they help complete.

Looking Beyond the Current Project

In construction, one project may last several months while another may take years to complete. But the relationships built along the way can last a lifetime.

Sanford Contractors’ own business relationships offer examples of how those connections can stand the test of time. When asked about long-term partners, Donnie pointed to several relationships that have continued over the years.

“We have proudly worked with Brookfield for nearly 20 years and partnered with Barnhill on Bridge projects for almost two decades. Tom Dawkins with Marsh McLennan has been a valued partner since 1986 along with Travelers and Gregory Poole who have also been long-standing partners. These relationships reflect our commitment to building strong, lasting relationships across the industry.

These relationships demonstrate how partnerships can extend beyond a single project and stand the test of time. Familiarity with one another’s expectations, communication styles, and approaches to challenges can make collaboration more effective over time.

Thirty Years of Putting Relationships First

On October 21, 2026, Sanford Contractors celebrated its 30th annual Partner Appreciation Day which marked three decades of bringing industry partners together and recognizing the connections that have helped shape the company over the years. The milestone reflects a relationship-focused approach that continues to influence how Sanford Contractors works with its partners.

The event’s history is also reflected in the people who have continued to attend over the years. Donnie shared that “Big Mike (Mike Goldberg), Barbara Angell and Pam Everwine have attended all of our Partner Appreciation events.

Their continued presence adds a personal dimension to the event’s history and serves as a reminder that business relationships are ultimately built between people.

Maintaining those connections requires more than an annual gathering. It takes consistent communication, reliability, and a willingness to stay connected even when there isn’t an active project bringing people together.

Construction will always involve deadlines, budgets, and complex work. But behind every successful project are people who contribute their time, knowledge, and experience. For Sanford Contractors, being One Trusted Partner means recognizing the value of those connections and continuing to invest in them, both on and off the jobsite.
