Sanford Contractors is making progress on the FirstHealth Montgomery Hospital project in Troy, NC, providing the site development and infrastructure needed to support the new facility. Working within an existing hospital campus, the team is managing a complex scope of work while maintaining access to the existing hospital and allowing campus operations to continue.

The project encompasses a 6.5-acre site and includes demolition of existing infrastructure, clearing, erosion control, grading, soil remediation, utility installation, storm drainage, curb and gutter, paving, striping, and concrete flatwork. The work has also required a significant amount of imported soil to prepare the site for construction.

The team has completed several key milestones, including removing existing infrastructure that conflicted with the new facility and installing new water, sewer, and storm drainage systems. An off-site water line has also been completed to supply the new hospital. After remediating existing soil conditions, Sanford Contractors delivered the prepared building pad to the general contractor. Portions of the paving were completed early to allow traffic to be rerouted around the construction area while maintaining access to the existing hospital.

With the new building’s walls now in place and braced, the team is currently working to backfill around the structure.

One of the project’s primary challenges is completing new construction within an active hospital campus. Sanford Contractors is working closely with the general contractor and other trades to coordinate site activities, maintain access, and help ensure the remainder of the campus can continue operating as normal.

The team has also had to locate decades-old infrastructure throughout and around the site, then coordinate connections between existing systems and the new utilities serving the hospital. This work requires careful investigation and planning to integrate the new infrastructure with the existing systems.
