Sanford Contractors’ Interns Reflect on Summer Experience
This summer, 11 talented interns from colleges across North Carolina joined the SCI team, contributing to our Site, Bridge, Building, Utility and Support Services Divisions. Throughout the summer, these interns worked closely with SCI’s construction professionals, gaining a thorough understanding of the construction industry and practical firsthand experience.
We asked Building Division Intern Sam McGuire and Site Division Intern Drew Thomas to share more about their experience.
Sam (pictured left) is an East Carolina University student and a SCI Internship program returning participant. In 2023, he interned with the Utility Division. This summer, Sam played a key role in managing the Hampton Inn & Suites project in Pittsboro, NC.
“I had the opportunity to gain valuable management experience,” said Sam. “My time in this program has pulled me in the right direction – this is what I want to do when I graduate.” His favorite thing about being an SCI Intern? “I got to experience something new and different each day. It was wonderful to get my hands in a bit of everything!”
Drew (pictured right) is a Central Carolina Community College student. This summer was his first in the SCI Internship Program, but not his first time on the SCI team – Drew participated in the inaugural Sanford Contractors Construction Academy and has been employed with SCI since. When asked what he enjoyed most this summer, Drew shared that building relationships with his new crew was a highlight.
“I feel like I have a much better understanding of the construction process,” said Drew. “Coming into this program, I planned to be a mechanical engineering major. I’ve since decided to major in construction management. This internship made me realize what I want to do with my career!”
