Built on Family: The Heart of Sanford Contractors

For many on our team, working at Sanford Contractors is more than a career. It is a tradition shared with family. Across all SCI divisions, parents, children, siblings, and more work side by side, carrying forward family traditions that have shaped our company and culture for decades.
The Culbertson Legacy
Bridge building runs deep in the Culbertson family, spanning four generations. It began with Ernest Culbertson, followed by his son Bobby, then Bobby’s sons Marty and Jeff, along with their cousin Gary, and now the latest generation, Josh. Marty described working alongside family as something natural. “I have never really felt like I was working a job,” he shared. “This is just what our family has always done. It is part of our legacy and the success we have built together.” Their history reflects decades of dedication, teamwork, and pride in their craft.
Felipe and His Crew
When you walk onto Felipe Aguilar Vitela’s jobsite, it feels like a family gathering. Of the nine people on his crew, eight are relatives, including his daughters, nephews, niece, sister-in-law, and brother. The ninth is a close family friend. Felipe was not the first in his family to join Sanford Contractors, but he has happily welcomed others to the team along the way. “Everyone here looks out for each other,” he said. “It has been a great place for my daughters to work and for all of us to grow together.”
The Goldbergs
Carrie Hernandez has been connected to Sanford Contractors her whole life. Inspired by the company’s values and culture and following in the footsteps of her father, Mike Goldberg, who recently celebrated 51 years with the company, she began her career here 23 years ago. “I have never known life without Sanford Contractors,” Carrie said. “They have seen me graduate, start my career, and raise a family. They care about the person, not just the work.” Her brother Josh also decided to join the company, continuing the family connection. For Mike, watching his children build their own paths at Sanford Contractors has been rewarding. “It has been neat to see them do their own thing,” he said. “I have stepped back and let them find their way. It feels good knowing they are part of a company that values them as people and supports their work.”
The Scotts
Ian Scott, Vice President of our Site Division, has built a 34-year career at Sanford Contractors, progressing from laborer to vice president. His father, Scottie, retired from the company in 2021 after 29 years of service, and his mother, Annette, also worked at Sanford Contractors, making the company a meaningful part of their family’s story.
Reflecting on that time, Ian shared: “I always knew I had great parents, but it wasn’t until they both retired that I fully appreciated how special it was to work alongside them. Sharing pride in each other’s work and simply seeing them every day are the things I miss most. Those years will always be some of the most meaningful of my career.”
Looking Ahead
When families choose to continue their careers at Sanford Contractors, it reflects the care, respect, and supportive culture that have been built over decades. While these examples highlight just a few of the many family connections across the company, we are grateful for every employee who contributes to our story. As a third-generation family company ourselves, Sanford Contractors is proud to create a culture where people and the next generation can grow, thrive, and carry on the legacy.
