What do effective leaders do?

If you posed this question to a room full of leaders, you’d get a range of responses. Some may say that leaders build a culture while others may feel leaders are there to make things happen, motivate, or encourage those around them to grow.

If you ask instead, “What should leaders do?” you’ll likely hear a more consistent message: “A leader’s job is to get results.”

At Sanford Contractors, this resonates with who we are. We are a results-driven company.

Results keep us in business. Developers and owners hire us to do quality work. They want us to complete projects in the most cost-effective and efficient way possible. To do this, we need leaders who know how to bring out the best in their team members.

Strong leaders know when to push and when to pull their crews. They know when they need to encourage them to work harder, and they know when they need to correct their behavior in a positive way. These leaders care about their team members and want to see them succeed.

Results-driven leaders have the kind of integrity that inspires trust from teammates and motivates others to do their best work.

If you’ve watched ESPN Sportscenter lately, you’ve seen the story about Duke’s Women’s Basketball Coach Kara Lawson. Recently, Coach Lawson addressed her players and shared a powerful message, encouraging them to “handle hard better.”

Life is filled with challenges. It’s not the absence of hard situations, but how we approach and handle them that determines their impact on us.

A difficult family situation, a demanding project or a conflict within your team might all be manageable separately, but sometimes several hard situations happen at once. In these moments, we have a chance to become better problem solvers and rise to the challenge. Coach Lawson said, “If you go around waiting for stuff to get easier in life, it’s never going to happen.”

So how does Lawson suggest we train ourselves to “handle hard better”?

“Focus on the present. Focus on the task at hand and come up with a solution to help you win each battle one at a time.”

As leaders and teammates, it’s important to know the power of positive reinforcement when we see each other struggling. Pick up a team member who may be down—together, you can make the burden less overwhelming.

Short-term failure is not defeat. Occasionally you will fail. Learn from those failures, and make the choice to get back up and “handle hard better.” It’s not about acquiring a specific set of skills — it’s about a strong mental approach to life.

Barnhill was awarded the 2023 Pinnacle Award for “Best Highway Project.” The Fayetteville Outer Loop, which extends from US-401 to Cliffdale Road, called for six new bridges and a replacement bridge. Despite setbacks from Hurricane Florence and the impacts of COVID-19, Barnhill’s and Sanford Contractor’s mutual commitment to safety and problem solving kept the project on schedule.

“There was a period where the entire Bridge Division was actively working here. Our Utility Division also assisted Barnhill with some utility relocations in the early stages of the job,” said Justin Carter, vice president of SCI’s Bridge & Heavy Construction Division.

“Everyone involved with this project should be immensely proud of this accomplishment. This award is a testament to the quality of our team and the quality of the finished product. This was a job well done!”

The completed Outer Loop project will offer residents, travelers and military personnel invaluable relief from traffic congestion and easier access to the military base.

The NCAA’s March Madness is one of SCI Development Director Zac West’s favorite events of the year. The excitement of the games, the anticipation of the competition, the thrill when your team wins, and even the letdown when they lose, keeps fans coming back for more every year.

Below, Zac shares some insight on the NCAA Tournament and leadership:

In a CollegeInsider.com article, three leadership lessons gleaned from the NCAA Tournament relate to everyday work situations.

1. Underdogs can shine

The first one is my favorite; I love the underdogs. When I am watching sports, my kids always ask me who I am pulling for. Most of the time, my answer is the underdog. I like seeing the “little guys” win. This is true on the court and off the court.

Look at the NC State Wolfpack team. No one thought they had a chance of winning, but they won the ACC Tournament, and in the Final Four for the first time since 1983, beating longtime rival Duke University. Whether you’re a NC State fan or not, watching NC State right now makes you feel good.

The same can be said for any team member at Sanford Contractors; indeed, anyone can be a leader. With mental and physical readiness, any underdog can shine.

2. Be prepared for the unexpected

When you are filling out a bracket, it’s easy to pick a #1 or #2 seed to beat a #15 or #16 seed in the first round. But as we’re starting to see more frequently, it’s not always a given. Just ask UNC-Chapel Hill fans, they’re still feeling the burn.

Team members must be ready for the unexpected every day. Being ready means being prepared. Leaders have to communicate with their team members and be ready to make a quick change if things don’t go as planned. In this business, leaders must be flexible and adaptable problem solvers.

3. Master the fundamentals

Growing up playing sports, my coaches always said to master the fundamentals to be a stronger athlete. Those words didn’t always resonate with me then, but as I’ve gotten older, I catch myself telling my kids the same thing.

SCI leaders work just as hard as athletes to master the fundamentals, which helped turn them into the professionals they are today. Mastering fundamentals takes strong commitment and dedication to your trade as well as years of consistent practice and effort.

So, when you glance at your tournament bracket or watch a Final Four game on TV, think about how NCAA Tournament lessons can help make you a stronger leader.
